How should raggers be dealt with..?

Ragging has become a national concern in the wake of 2 recent incidents, which rocked the nation at large. But why do people wake up only when some loses his life or an attempt to suicide is done? Why don’t people wake much before to avoid such incidents? Parents should take proactive measure to find a cure for this menace to avoid regression at later stages. Every year lakhs of student enroll themselves to various colleges for various courses, but nobody bothers to enquire about anti ragging measures in colleges. Students take it for granted, thinking will tackle it when the situation arises. But ragging is an inevitable part of the curriculum which doesn’t attract much of attention of student in comparison to other subjects.

Only few parents try to inquire about the past history of the colleges, especially in terms of incidents of ragging. Even then such incidents keep happening why? Colleges give assurance to parents at the time of admission that ragging is not permitted in their colleges and all precautionary measures have been taken into consideration to tackle with raggers. If these assurances were really trustworthy, then incidents of ragging should surface but in reality freshers are ragged by their senior’s and colleges are not aware about it, till some untoward incident occur. Reason for it is that college authority take responsibility of students only for their campus and classrooms, hostels are often overlooked by them. Incidents of ragging are reported only in hostel in comparison to any other place.

Though Supreme Court has come out with ruling to deal with raggers and the colleges supporting it, but seems like students have not taken it seriously. I feel capital punishment should be awarded to those students who indulge in ragging, it shouldn’t be treated as an attempt to death only then students will fear it and deter from it, at least thinking about the intensity of their deeds. In colleges where ragging is reported, affiliations of the college should be cancelled.

Selection of hostel warden should be done on strict criteria. In case of ragging they should also be treated as culprit in crime and be executed accordingly. Hostels for seniors and freshers should be at distance and should have adequate security for the safety of students.

All these could be few suggestions, but to get it implemented we need to stand united to fight for this cause. Parents and students need to take a lead in this regard. Each of us will have to ragging one day or other, either to us directly or to our kids indirectly.
